A gemstone in its natural form is rough and unattractive. Even the prettiest of the natural uncut gemstones fall short of our expectations. This is where cut comes in. The allure of a particular gemstone depends more on cut than anything else.

The term Cut identifies the Shape and Cutting Style of a gem. Shape refers to the face-up outline of a gem, and Cutting Style is the arrangement of its facets.

Round

It's a classic that's always in fashion. It's the shape everyone thinks of when they picture a diamond. It can have either 57 or 58 facets, the 58th being a tiny flat facet at the bottom of the pavilion, known as the culet. Its facet cut is calibrated through a precise formula to achieve the maximum in fire and brilliance. The facet arrangement hides inclusions and generally there are more sizes to choose from than there are for any other diamond cut. This shape has set the standard for all other diamond shapes, and accounts for more than 75% of diamonds sold today.

Princess

This is a square or rectangular cut with numerous sparkling facets. If you love the fire of the traditional Round Brilliant Cut but want something a little different, you might just fall in love with the icy fire of the Princess Cut. Most square or rectangular cuts just don't live up to the round brilliant for sparkle, but the Princess Cut was designed for getting maximum brilliance from a square cut. They have great optical effects, and look flashy but solid. Flattering to a hand with long fingers, it is often embellished with triangular stones at its sides. It is especially popular in channel settings, because their strait sides allow princess cuts to be set against each other, while rounds leave gaps.

Oval

The Oval Cut has beautiful brilliance that's similar to a round brilliant cut. Oval cuts are also very popular as their length can accentuate long, slender fingers. This design is popular among women with small hands or short fingers because its elongated shape gives a flattering illusion of length to the hand. It's a wonderful selection for someone who loves the sparkle of the round brilliant, but desires a less common shape.

Pear

The Pear Cut is also called the "teardrop" because of its shape. The pear shaped cut is a combination cut of the oval and the marquise. Pear shapes look graceful and stylish without being trendy; they tend to look more graceful on the finger than a round of the same weight. They are particularly beautiful for drop pendants and earrings.

Marquise

The marquise is an elongated, elliptical cut with curved sides and pointed ends. It can complement a long finger and can appear larger to the eye than round brilliants of equivalent weight. It finds its way into a variety of attractive jewelry designs.

Emerald

As may be evident by the name, the "emerald cut" was originally developed for cutting emeralds. It was soon discovered that the emerald cut was also suitable for other stones, including diamonds. The emerald cut can be absolutely stunning. Because of its long lines, it tends to be less fiery than a round brilliant cut, but it also tends to have broader, more dramatic flashes of light. The trim lines of the emerald cut lend an elegant, sophisticated air to both the simplest and most elaborate ring settings.

Cushion

The cushion-cut is a deep cut with large facets, an open bottom, and rounded corners. The depth of this cut encourages the eye to travel around the inside of the stone. This cut is not as fiery or brilliant as many of the other cuts, but it has a marvelously romantic and classic look and definitely stands out from the crowd of round brilliants and princess cuts.

Heart

This ultimate symbol of romance is essentially a pear-shaped diamond with a cleft at the top. The diamond itself is considered by some to be the most romantic of all diamond cuts. The heart shaped diamond can be quite fiery with excellent sparkle.

Half Moon

The Half Moon resembles a round brilliant divided in half from top to bottom, creating a half moon face up outline. They are primarily used as side stones.

Trillion

The Trillion Cut is a brilliant fancy shape that is triangular. It shows excellent light performance and in smaller sizes it's often used as nice side stones. They're a nice alternative for people who want something different.

Baguette

The Baguette Cut is one of the most traditional forms of all cuts. Baguette cuts generally look longer and also resemble emerald cuts. Those who prefer long shaped diamonds can surely go for baguette cut diamonds. This cut is not as fiery or brilliant as many of the other cuts, but it has a marvelously elegant and classic look.
